There is a saying with plumbers... "They always have the WORST plumbing in their houses". Why is this? It's because the plumber is fixing others plumbing day in and day out. When they finally arrive home, hopefully to a loving wife (or perhaps husband), they really do not want to take the time to work on their own plumbing.
Why? Quite simply, home is designed to be an escape away from work. Who would want to do landscaping all day and then have to come home and mow your own yard? I wouldn't. The same thing goes towards plumbers, electricians, and yes, network and server administrators.
I am a Server Administrator. I fix things. I break things. I make things do what they're not supposed to, and yes, occasionally, I make the square peg fit into the round hole.
I do my job, and I am of the opinion that I do it well. I work hard, and in some cases, long hours. The LAST thing I want to do when I arrive home, is work on my own network. The hassle simply is not worth my time. Until the stuff in my house stops working, then I'll let it be.
I'll be the first to admit, I know there are things I need to do to improve my servers, my network, my (fill-in-the-blank-here). I simply do not care. I want to have fun, with friends, doing what I like to do in my off time. This does not involve high level computing. (Except for the obligitory email, etc)
